Fiji Takes Inspiration from New Zealand’s Timber Innovation

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, recently visited Red Stag Timber, a privately-owned timber company located in Rotorua, New Zealand.

Red Stag Timber stands as the largest timber company in the Southern Hemisphere, producing over 600,000 cubic meters of Radiata Pine and Douglas-fir timber each year and generating an annual turnover exceeding NZ $220 million. The company is distinguished for its innovative approaches and commitment to sustainable timber production.

During his visit, DPM Kamikamica focused on the success of this major sawmill, which supplies high-quality timber to markets in New Zealand, Australia, and the Pacific region. He commended Red Stag Timber for its advancements in innovation and supply chain development, suggesting that cooperation with Fijian industries could be advantageous.

Kamikamica noted that by adopting efficient technology and best practices from Red Stag Timber, Fiji could develop strategies to enhance its forestry sector, with a particular emphasis on mahogany, a key export for the country.

He expressed gratitude to Red Stag Timber for the insights gained during the visit and expressed anticipation for future collaborations within the timber industry.
