Fiji has proudly become the first Pacific Island nation to receive state-of-the-art surveillance drones from the Government of France, a significant step towards bolstering its maritime security capabilities. The milestone was marked during a handover event at the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Headquarters in Suva, where French Ambassador Julie Le Saos presented two advanced drones and two laptops to RFMF Commander Major General Jone Kalouniwai.
The donation, valued at $140,000, is expected to enhance Fiji’s ability to conduct maritime surveillance and respond effectively to disasters. Ambassador Le Saos highlighted that this initiative reflects France’s dedication to regional security and its broader Indo-Pacific strategy, emphasizing the importance of modern technology in tackling maritime threats, disaster response, and overall defense capabilities.
Major General Kalouniwai expressed gratitude for the support, stating that the drones will facilitate real-time intelligence gathering, particularly in combating illegal fishing and managing disaster response efforts. The laptops provided will also contribute to strategic planning initiatives within the RFMF.
This donation builds upon the longstanding defense relations between Fiji and France, which have included joint exercises and peacekeeping missions. As part of this initiative, RFMF personnel will undergo drone operation training in New Caledonia, a step that both nations see as paving the way for future collaborations in cybersecurity, joint training, and climate resilience.
