In response to the recent tragic Air India incident in Ahmedabad, Fiji has initiated a thorough review and targeted safety audit of its aviation systems, with the objective of preventing similar tragedies in its airspace. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka announced that the Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji (CAAF) has commenced an inspection of all Fiji-registered aircraft that share systems with the Boeing 787 involved in the crash, including the Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A330 and A350 fleets.

This audit aligns with the best-practice safety protocols established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and other regional oversight bodies. Minister Gavoka stressed that while Fiji has not experienced incidents akin to the Air India crash, the government is taking a proactive approach to ensure safety in aviation. “We will not wait for a tragedy to happen before acting,” he stated.

The review focuses on crucial safety systems, including engine fuel cut-off mechanisms, Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) systems, emergency shutdown and restart protocols, and black box data capabilities. In light of the findings from the Air India crash, which revealed significant failures in cockpit coordination, CAAF is also enhancing its surveillance of operator training programs, emphasizing Crew Resource Management (CRM)—a discipline aimed at improving communication, leadership, and decision-making within the cockpit.

These measures signify Fiji’s serious commitment to uphold and surpass international aviation safety standards, reinforcing its reputation as a responsible aviation hub in the Pacific region. The ongoing review and enhancement of regulations reflect a broader initiative to ensure high safety compliance and operational excellence in the aviation sector.

Fiji’s proactive stance not only prioritizes the safety of air travel but also illustrates a commitment to improving communication and operational standards in the industry, which is essential for maintaining public confidence and trust in aviation safety.
