Fiji has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment during its participation in the 69th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) held in New York. The Fijian delegation, led by Emily Kamoe-Veiqati, Acting Director of the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection, highlighted significant advancements that the nation has made in various crucial areas concerning women’s rights.

During a High-Level Interactive Dialogue at the conference, Fiji expressed its dedication to implementing the Beijing Platform for Action—a pivotal framework aimed at enhancing women’s rights globally—indicating a strong alignment with international standards for gender equality.

Fiji’s country statement emphasized progress in several key domains, including:

– Inclusive education initiatives for women and girls
– Improved access to healthcare services
– Opportunities for women’s entrepreneurship
– Development of gender-responsive policy and planning

The discussions at CSW69 are particularly significant this year as they commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration, reflecting on achievements and setting goals for the future. Fiji’s involvement underscores its proactive stance on regional and international collaboration to address ongoing challenges related to gender equality.

Fiji’s engagement at the conference also included dialogue with international partners. Notably, a meeting with Dr. Maliha Khan, President of Women Deliver, explored Fiji’s potential role in the upcoming Women Deliver 2026 Conference in Melbourne, focusing on leadership in combatting gender-based violence and enhancing women’s economic empowerment.

It is crucial to acknowledge previous statements from Fiji’s Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya, who has noted that while significant progress has been made—such as 57% of graduates from tertiary institutions being female—ongoing challenges persist. These include entrenched patriarchal norms, gender-based violence, and the struggle for effective implementation of gender-responsive policies.

Despite the obstacles, Fiji’s commitment to strengthening initiatives that foster women’s leadership and economic participation presents a hopeful outlook for the future. The government’s announcement of a five-year gender equality accountability initiative set to launch in early 2024 demonstrates a serious commitment to monitoring and ensuring that promised advancements lead to concrete outcomes for women and girls.

Fiji’s dedicated efforts at CSW69 not only reflect a strong resolve towards advancing gender equality but also signify a collaborative spirit aimed at creating a more equitable society for all. Moving forward, these initiatives hold the promise of empowering women and girls across the Pacific.
