Fiji showcased its dedication to global peace and security during the recent United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial Meeting held from May 13-14 in Berlin. The delegation was led by Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs Pio Tikoduadua, accompanied by Brigadier General Manoa Gadai and Colonel Siliva Vananalagi of Fiji’s UN Mission.
The meeting was inaugurated by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Germany’s Foreign Minister, gathering senior defence officials from troop-contributing nations to discuss enhancements in peacekeeping operations focusing on accountability, inclusivity, and gender equity. This aligns with Fiji’s ongoing commitment to the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda.
A pivotal moment during the meeting was Germany’s introduction of new peacekeeping equipment for Fijian female personnel, exemplifying international support for gender-responsive operations. Minister Tikoduadua also participated in significant bilateral discussions with senior officials, including the UN Military Adviser and representatives from the US Department of State, Japan, New Zealand, and Australia.
This engagement highlights Fiji’s proactive approach to reinforcing its international peacekeeping role, advocating for safer and more inclusive missions. The acknowledgment of Fijian forces at the meeting and the commitment to enhancing the experiences of soldiers, especially women, emphasizes the important stride towards gender inclusivity within the military.
Fiji’s stance on these pressing issues reflects not only dedication to its own personnel but also a commitment to contributing positively to the landscape of international peacekeeping efforts. With the support of global partners, Fiji is positioned to maintain its influence and efficacy in peace operations while continuing to honor and improve the conditions for its peacekeepers, further fostering a spirit of collaboration and resilience in the field.
