Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Professor Biman Prasad, recently engaged with Pio Smith, the Regional Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), during the High-Level Regional Consultation on Financing for Development in Asia and the Pacific in Bangkok.
In their discussion, DPM Prasad expressed gratitude towards UNFPA for their assistance in formulating Fiji’s inaugural National Population Policy. This significant policy aims to tackle demographic shifts and synchronize population dynamics with the country’s broader development objectives.
The implementation of this policy is anticipated to be crucial in guiding Fiji towards sustainable growth in the future. Additionally, UNFPA is optimistic about Fiji’s involvement in the upcoming 58th session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD), scheduled for April 2025.
This collaboration between Fiji and UNFPA marks a vital step in ensuring that population policies align with developmental goals, fostering a brighter and more stable future for the nation.
Overall, the dialogue signifies a proactive approach to addressing demographic challenges while promoting sustainable development, reflecting Fiji’s commitment to progress and collaboration on a global scale.
