Fiji is making strides toward national reconciliation as it formalizes support for the Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission through a new agreement with the British High Commission. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), signed on February 6, 2025, in Suva, showcases a commitment to fostering dialogue and healing within the nation.
The signing ceremony was attended by British High Commissioner Dr. Brian Jones and Hon. Sashi Kiran, the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection. Minister Kiran expressed her appreciation for the United Kingdom’s contributions, particularly in areas such as media, communications, and capacity-building, all essential for promoting national healing and reconciliation.
As part of this agreement, the British High Commission has pledged FJD $120,000 to support the Commission’s legal and public relations efforts from January to March 2025. This financial assistance is expected to enhance the Commission’s ability to engage with the public and facilitate transparent dialogue.
This partnership not only emphasizes the importance of international collaboration in addressing historical challenges but also reflects a hopeful commitment to healing and reconciliation in Fiji. With the backing of the UK, Fiji is poised to strengthen its efforts in promoting a more unified and harmonious society.
