Fiji has commenced the review process for its 6th State CEDAW Report with an important stakeholders’ meeting held in Suva. Co-hosted by the Ministry of Women, Children, and Poverty Alleviation and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), the gathering brought together government representatives to strategize on advancing gender equality in line with international commitments.
Eseta Nadakuitavuki, the Permanent Secretary, highlighted the meeting’s importance, asserting that it is more than a routine event; it marks a significant step in Fiji’s dedication to the principles of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). She affirmed, “CEDAW is not merely a treaty but a robust commitment to eradicate gender-based discrimination, ensuring women and girls globally enjoy their full rights and opportunities.”
Since ratifying CEDAW in 1995, Fiji has made substantial strides in dismantling systemic barriers to gender equality and empowering women and girls. However, Permanent Secretary Nadakuitavuki acknowledged ongoing challenges, as the 6th State Report outlines both achievements and remaining hurdles.
“Achieving CEDAW compliance demands much more than documentation; it necessitates transformative action,” she reiterated, emphasizing the values of transparency and renewed commitment in tackling obstacles that impede women’s participation in society.
The Fijian government is firmly committed to placing gender equality at the heart of national development strategies. Nadakuitavuki emphasized that complying with CEDAW extends beyond fulfilling international obligations—it’s about fostering meaningful and lasting change for all women and girls in Fiji.
Notably, this stakeholder meeting aligns with Fiji’s overarching commitment to hosting the Pacific Technical Cooperation Session of the United Nations CEDAW Committee in April 2025. This upcoming event will be historic, occurring for the first time outside Geneva, and reflects a regional dedication to enhancing women’s rights and gender equality.
