The Fijian Ministry of Communications is optimistic about securing crucial resources in the next financial year for the establishment of the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT). This initiative is poised to enhance cyber protection across both public and private networks in Fiji.
Permanent Secretary Shaheen Ali reported that budget submissions emphasizing the pressing need for stronger cybersecurity have been made. Following the initial round of budget consultations with permanent secretaries, early indications have been promising, reflecting a heightened awareness of cyber threats and the necessity for an effective preparedness framework.
“We are hopeful that we will secure the resources needed to establish CERT,” Ali stated, acknowledging the current scarcity of resources but expressing confidence in the ministry’s capacity to acquire what is essential. He emphasized that training and the development of skilled personnel will be vital components for the successful operation of CERT.
Izzy Cox, the Head of Cyber Affairs at the Ministry of Communications, reinforced the importance of a resilient infrastructure to support CERT effectively. Continuous investment in infrastructure is necessary to keep pace with the changing nature of cyber risks and to secure national digital assets. This investment will also contribute to stronger coordination among various government entities, addressing the need for a unified response to cyber threats.
The establishment of CERT aligns with Fiji’s ongoing commitment to improving its cybersecurity landscape. Efforts include collaborations with international partners, such as Australia, to bolster cyber capabilities. These initiatives collectively demonstrate Fiji’s resolve to create a secure digital environment, fostering public confidence in its institutions and positioning the nation as a leader in regional cybersecurity efforts.
This proactive approach not only aims to protect Fiji’s digital infrastructure but also signals an inspiring commitment to the safety and security of its citizens in an increasingly digital world.
