The Cabinet has approved the rollout of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) – Early Action Support Project, which will receive funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
According to a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister, the GEF serves as the largest multilateral fund aimed at empowering developing nations to invest in environmental initiatives. It backs the implementation of key international environmental agreements related to biodiversity, climate change, chemicals, and desertification.
Fiji has obtained funding for this project to assess its priority biodiversity focus areas as outlined in the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) for 2020 – 2025 and to ensure alignment with the new biodiversity targets of the Global Biodiversity Framework.
This initiative will involve a comprehensive approach that engages both governmental and societal stakeholders through an Inter-Ministerial NBSAP dialogue, fostering consultations with essential participants such as government bodies, civil societies, non-governmental organizations, regional entities, resource owners, and academic organizations.
The project is expected to be completed by February 28, 2025.
