In Fiji, a staggering five out of six children have faced some form of abuse, prompting urgent action from the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection. Minister Sashi Kiran unveiled plans for a new parenting app aimed at helping parents navigate difficult conversations with their children during a recent parliamentary discussion concerning the Cinematographic Film Amendment Bill.
Kiran raised alarms about the rising exposure of children to inappropriate digital content, which has led to a disturbing trend in harmful behaviors, including instances of violence among peers. This app is part of a comprehensive strategy designed to empower parents with effective parenting tools and resources that promote positive interactions with their children.
In addition to the app, the Ministry is focusing on improving access to counseling and therapeutic services for children affected by abuse, as many victims currently lack essential psychological support. Kiran highlighted the critical importance of early intervention to break the cycle of violence, emphasizing that neglected children may repeat the patterns of abuse they’ve endured.
As part of the initiative, the Ministry has already trained 20 counselors, with another 15 currently in training, who utilize innovative therapies such as sports, art, and music to aid in children’s healing. This comprehensive approach also includes educational initiatives for families, aimed at reinforcing the need to protect children from detrimental influences.
Recent statistics show that around 72% of children in Fiji have encountered various forms of violence, underscoring the urgent need for collective community engagement. By enhancing education in positive parenting, expanding support services, and encouraging responsible reporting, there is renewed hope for fostering a safer environment that values and protects every child.
