The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in Fiji is taking significant steps to enhance its capacity to monitor and report on emissions from the energy sector. A three-day training workshop held in Nadi, led by Dr. Sivendra Michael, the Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, aims to build local capacity among stakeholders in the energy sector. This initiative is crucial for preparing greenhouse gas inventories and tracking performance related to Fiji’s commitments under the Paris Agreement.

Dr. Michael emphasized that the workshop contributes to the Capacity Building Initiative for Transparency project, executed with assistance from the Global Green Growth Institute and the United Nations Environment Programme. He noted that the involvement of various stakeholders demonstrates a shared commitment to improving data quality, fostering collaboration, and integrating effective climate action into national frameworks.

The workshop will help participants understand Fiji’s international reporting obligations while enhancing their technical abilities to collect and analyze emissions data. This training is particularly essential for increasing stakeholder capacities to monitor and report on the implementation of Fiji’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The final day of the workshop will focus specifically on these commitments, aiming to ensure accurate and transparent efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Participants include government representatives, private sector members, and academic professionals, showcasing the collaborative effort required to tackle the climate crisis effectively. These sectoral training efforts are aimed at reinforcing Fiji’s climate change governance, enabling informed decision-making, and supporting sustainability across the national energy landscape.

In light of prior initiatives, such as workshops on building resilience and integrating climate actions at the community level, this training aligns with Fiji’s overarching goal of fostering local engagement and collaboration. Continued investment in capacity building is vital for empowering communities to address climate challenges proactively and sustainably.

Overall, this workshop symbolizes hope for Fiji as it strives towards a greener future, ensuring that all stakeholders are well-equipped to navigate the complexities of climate change.
