Fiji is set to benefit from a new agreement between India and the International Solar Alliance (ISA), which aims to fund solar projects not only in Fiji but also in three African nations: Comoros, Madagascar, and Seychelles. This significant undertaking marks a step forward in promoting clean energy solutions across the Indo-Pacific region.

The initiative is backed by a US$2 million (approximately FJD 4.6 million) investment from India, forming part of its commitments under the Quad Climate Working Group. The projects planned include the installation of solar pumps, solar refrigerators, and solar rooftop panels, with an expected completion date of mid-2025. This timeline underscores the urgency to tackle climate challenges facing the region.

Fiji will see two major solar projects initiated under this agreement. One of the key projects is the Solar Rooftop Panels initiative for healthcare facilities, which is valued at US$261,900 (around FJD 607,000). This project aims to provide reliable and sustainable energy, significantly enhancing service delivery and operational efficiency while decreasing reliance on traditional power sources. The second initiative, known as the Solar Cold Storage project, involves an investment of US$277,500 (approximately FJD 643,000) to develop essential cold chain infrastructure. This will be crucial for preserving perishable goods and life-saving medicines, bolstering food security and healthcare outcomes in Fiji.

These initiatives not only aim to bolster Fiji’s renewable energy capacity but also support the nation’s transition towards sustainable energy systems, addressing the unique challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

The International Solar Alliance is dedicated to promoting the adoption of solar power for a carbon-neutral future, comprising 120 member countries including Fiji, Kiribati, Tonga, and Tuvalu. The ISA aims to accelerate solar energy projects and deliver tailored programs for the specific needs of least developed countries and small island nations. The Indian government emphasizes that fostering strategic partnerships and innovative solar solutions empowers member countries like Fiji to harness clean energy technologies, thus advancing sustainable development and resilience in confronting global energy and climate challenges.
