Fiji has launched a new Gender Barrier Assessment Project aimed at boosting the number of women participating in United Nations peacekeeping missions. This project is a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Defence, Fiji Police Force, Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Cornell University, and ETHOS-CRS.

Currently, as of January 31, 2025, Fiji has a total of 336 uniformed personnel in peacekeeping roles, with only 45 of them being women. Dr. Deanne Roark, a research leader from Cornell University’s Gender and Security Lab, emphasized that this study will delve into the specific challenges women face in joining and fulfilling roles in peacekeeping, as well as highlight successful strategies that have already been implemented. The findings are expected to guide the formation of policies that support women in both military and police capacities.

Elizabeth St George, co-lead researcher from ETHOS CRS, expressed the significance of this study, pointing out that it aims to uncover barriers to female participation in UN peacekeeping forces, ultimately promoting gender equality within Fiji’s contributions to global operations. Permanent Secretary for Defence Mason Smith remarked that this research marks a pioneering effort in the Pacific region, indicating a strong commitment to enhancing inclusivity in peacekeeping forces.

The findings from this comprehensive assessment are anticipated in early 2026, aligning with Fiji’s Women, Peace, and Security Plan for 2025-2029. This initiative reflects Fiji’s ongoing efforts to empower women and ensure that forces are representative of the diverse populations they serve.

This positive development showcases Fiji’s proactive stance towards creating equal opportunities within its peacekeeping missions, recognizing that diverse teams contribute to greater effectiveness and resilience in operations. Through this project, there is hope for a more inclusive future where women are empowered to take on significant roles in peacekeeping efforts globally.
