The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) is currently conducting a thorough preliminary survey in Fiji aimed at establishing a National Alcohol and Other Drugs Recovery Center. This initiative, introduced by the Ministry of Health, is part of a larger strategy to combat the increasing substance abuse issues in Fiji by providing essential support for individuals battling addiction.
The proposed recovery center will focus on delivering direct assistance to those suffering from substance use disorders, prioritizing vulnerable groups such as women, youth, and children. Additionally, it seeks to offer support and resources to healthcare professionals dedicated to this demanding field.
The Ministry of Health has indicated that the center’s development will involve engaging with both affected individuals and the broader community to ensure the services are customized to meet the specific needs of its intended users. The ministry underlines the significance of including those impacted by substance use in the planning process, thereby enhancing the center’s capacity to address these challenges effectively.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, expressed strong enthusiasm for the establishment of this drug rehabilitation facility, noting the urgent need for a dedicated space to confront substance abuse issues. He stated that discussions regarding rehab centers have been ongoing, and the Ministry is committed to this endeavor. Under the Narcotics Strategy’s framework, the Ministry is actively pursuing harm reduction measures, which include establishing a national rehabilitation center.
Dr. Tudravu highlighted the increasing burden that drug-related cases have placed on existing mental health facilities, specifically at St. Giles Hospital, which was originally constructed for treating mental illnesses but is now facing a rising number of drug-related patients. He described this as a concerning trend, emphasizing the necessity for having a dedicated facility to address these issues.
This proactive approach by the Fiji government, in collaboration with KOICA, is a beacon of hope for those affected by substance use disorders, as it looks to create a more supportive environment for recovery and healing. Collaborating with the community and those directly impacted ensures that the center will serve its purpose effectively. As this initiative progresses, it may lead to significant positive changes in the landscape of addiction treatment in Fiji.
