Fiji Takes Bold Step to Combat HIV Crisis with New Health Unit

The Fijian Ministry of Health is set to establish an HIV and Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) Unit within its Family Health Division, as announced by Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu. This initiative aims to coordinate a comprehensive response to the urgent public health crisis prompted by a significant increase in the number of HIV cases across the country.

In his remarks, Dr. Lalabalavu underscored the escalating nature of the HIV outbreak in Fiji, noting that new diagnoses have reached alarming levels, with figures reflecting unprecedented growth. The minister emphasized the urgency for collaborative efforts, urging both the policy makers at the ministry and community members on the frontline to unite in tackling this critical health challenge.

He acknowledged the support received from fellow Cabinet ministers, reiterating their shared commitment to addressing the HIV epidemic and related co-infections such as tuberculosis. Alongside the establishment of the new unit, which will be guided by senior health advisor Dr. Jason Mitchell, the Ministry intends to improve public awareness, bolster testing efforts, and enhance treatment accessibility for individuals affected by HIV.

This move is part of a broader strategy; previous reports highlighted the alarming statistics surrounding HIV in Fiji, with nearly 1,600 new cases reported last year and ongoing efforts to mobilize resources through the HIV Surge Strategy for 2024-2027.
