The Fiji Police Force is preparing to destroy 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine today, February 24, 2025, at the Dignified Crematorium, as mandated by a High Court order issued on December 13, 2024. This operation is a significant step in Fiji’s ongoing campaign against drug trafficking and its commitment to public safety.
The destruction method chosen for this operation is vaporization in a furnace, which is recognized globally for its effectiveness in safely disposing of hazardous drugs. Authorities have engaged in extensive consultations with various stakeholders to ensure that the process adheres to best practices and addresses health and environmental concerns.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Crime, Mesake Waqa, assured the public of the operation’s transparency, stating that legal representatives for the defendants involved will be allowed to observe the destruction process under strict security protocols. After the operation, detailed reports will be published to maintain accountability.
Key participants in this operation include multiple government ministries such as Justice, Health, and Environment, in addition to the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and international law enforcement agencies from Australia and New Zealand. This collaboration highlights a concerted effort to confront drug-related challenges and underscores the vital goal of ensuring community safety.
The destruction of these dangerous drugs is both a critical action and a hopeful sign of progress in Fiji’s fight against illicit substances. By addressing the root causes of drug trafficking, authorities are working towards creating a safer environment for all citizens. This operation exemplifies resilience and determination in the ongoing struggle against drug-related issues in the region.
