The Fijian Ministry of Communication is set to launch a Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) within the current financial year, according to Permanent Secretary for Communication Shaheen Ali. This CERT will act as a vital security measure for both public and private sector networks, becoming the nation’s primary defense against cyber threats. Ali emphasized the necessity of ensuring that the CERT is sufficiently resourced to effectively respond to any cyber incidents that may jeopardize Fiji’s digital infrastructure.
Development partners, including Australia, are providing assistance in upskilling a technical team dedicated to managing the CERT. Ali noted that this not only builds confidence among government agencies and critical infrastructure but also reassures the private sector. “Establishing and resourcing the Computer Emergency Response Team is crucial for the safety of our digital landscape,” he stated.
Furthermore, to complement the CERT, a detailed privacy and data protection policy is being developed, which will enhance the CERT’s capability to handle its responsibilities effectively. Izzy Cox, the Head of Cyber Affairs at the Ministry, expressed the critical importance of this initiative amid a rise in cybercrimes, stating, “The CERT will act as the digital first responder of Fiji.”
This initiative aligns with previous commitments by the Fijian government to enhance its cybersecurity measures, including the establishment of a 24/7 government security operations center earlier this year.
