The Fiji Police Force has confirmed the commencement of the destruction of 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine, seized during significant drug raids in Nadi in January. This process is being conducted in compliance with a High Court order issued on December 13, 2024, and is taking place at the Dignified Crematorium in Davuilevu, Nasinu, under stringent security measures by both the Fiji Police Force and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.

Valued at nearly $2 billion, the drugs will be vaporized in a furnace—an internationally recognized method for safely disposing of illicit substances. Senior Superintendent of Police Kasiano Vusonilawe emphasized the police’s commitment to public safety and reassured the community, stating, “I can assure the public right now that they don’t have to worry about anything. The Fiji Police Force is committed to ensuring all the drugs are destroyed, and we are well prepared to do that.”

To ensure a safe and transparent process, extensive preparatory measures have been undertaken, including collaboration with international partners from Australia, New Zealand, and the USA, and deployment of specialized canines for area clearance. The destruction operation is expected to take between five to seven days, with controlled incinerators capable of processing varying amounts of drugs at a time.

This operation showcases a united effort in Fiji’s ongoing war against drug trafficking while reinforcing the authorities’ determination to maintain integrity and public safety throughout the process. By effectively eliminating such a substantial quantity of dangerous drugs from circulation, the Fiji Police demonstrate their proactive stance toward fostering a safer environment for all citizens.

The coordinated approach highlights not only the commitment of law enforcement to uphold the rule of law but also instills hope for a future free from the impacts of drug-related crime. This destruction not only removes significant threats but also symbolizes progress and a collective stride toward community wellness.
