In a significant move to promote disaster preparedness in Fiji, the Fiji Business Disaster Resilience Council, in partnership with the National Disaster Risk Management Office, launched new disaster awareness materials in Suva. This initiative, which reached out to students from years 9 to 13 and their families, aims to cultivate a culture of readiness as the cyclone season approaches.
Inoke Raikoso, a Senior Education Officer from the Ministry of Education, acknowledged the difficulties faced in fostering a culture of disaster preparedness. He pointed out the vulnerability of many communities and the aging infrastructure of several schools, some having been established in the 1800s. These factors complicate efforts to effectively implement disaster preparedness strategies.
The Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Disaster Management, Isoa Talemaibua, emphasized the importance of distributing these awareness materials, claiming the launch of 10,000 calendars and disaster resources signifies a vital partnership committed to enhancing community readiness. He noted that these materials serve as practical tools offering daily reminders for families to prioritize disaster preparedness.
This campaign has successfully reached over 50,000 homes and nearly 70,000 students nationwide over the past year, with an additional 50,000 households set to receive similar materials this year. Such extensive outreach signifies a steadfast commitment to developing a resilient and informed community as Fiji prepares for the cyclone season, which runs from November to April.
Recent government initiatives, including calls from Minister Sakiasi Ditoka for increased household readiness and youth involvement in disaster risk management, align with these efforts. By fostering an environment of preparedness, Fiji aims to empower its youth and safeguard its most vulnerable populations against the increasing threats posed by climate change and natural disasters.
In summary, the launch of these disaster awareness materials not only highlights a collaborative approach to enhancing community resilience but also inspires a hopeful vision for a more prepared society. As the nation braces for the cyclone season, these proactive initiatives could significantly improve safety and awareness among all Fijians, working towards a future where communities are better equipped to respond to natural disasters.
