In a significant step toward enhancing disaster preparedness in Fiji, the Fiji Business Disaster Resilience Council, partnering with the National Disaster Risk Management Office, has launched new disaster awareness materials in Suva. This effort aims to educate students in years 9 through 13 and their families about the importance of being prepared for natural disasters, particularly as the cyclone season approaches.

Inoke Raikoso, Senior Education Officer from the Ministry of Education, emphasized the challenges in promoting a culture of disaster preparedness, noting the vulnerabilities faced by many communities and the aging infrastructure of some schools, some of which date back to the 1800s. These issues complicate the implementation of effective strategies for disaster readiness.

Isoa Talemaibua, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Disaster Management, underscored the significance of distributing these materials, describing it as a celebration of strong partnerships. He announced the distribution of 10,000 calendars and informative disaster preparedness materials, stating they serve as daily reminders for families and individuals to enhance their readiness for potential natural disasters.

Over the past year, more than 50,000 homes and nearly 70,000 students have received these materials, with plans to reach an additional 50,000 households this year. This comprehensive campaign signifies a commitment to fostering a resilient and informed community as Fiji prepares for the cyclone season, which typically lasts from November to April.

The government’s focus on engaging youth in disaster risk management aligns with recent calls from officials like Minister Sakiasi Ditoka, who stresses the need for households to take proactive steps to ensure their safety.
