Fiji Takes Action: Analyzing the Impact of Adult Content on National Data Usage

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, has revealed that in Fiji, 92 terabytes of data are consumed monthly for accessing pornographic and adult content. In his Ministerial Statement, he noted that such content has established a significant footprint in terms of network traffic.

Data analysis over a three-month period indicated that approximately 626 terabytes of data were downloaded, placing this usage among the top ten data traffic categories. Kamikamica highlighted that this volume equates to around 100 million books.

He remarked, “The prevalence of adult content and pornography is evident as it consumes a considerable portion of network traffic. The statistics are clear… this industry is substantial.”

To combat the societal risks linked to pornography, the Deputy Prime Minister announced that the Cabinet has approved the formation of a National Taskforce. This initiative aims to deepen the understanding of these risks in Fiji and offer effective recommendations for their mitigation.

Kamikamica emphasized that the task force is more than just a symbolic action; it signifies the Coalition Government’s serious commitment to addressing these issues. He mentioned that efforts are underway to finalize a Cabinet paper for the Fiji Government, working with the Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of Women and Children, to join the WeProtect Global Alliance—an international effort focused on tackling online child sexual abuse.
