FIJI Chemicals Limited has stepped up in the fight against termite infestations by donating approximately 100 baits and traps to address the growing termite issue in Fiji’s Western Division. At a recent handover ceremony in Lautoka, Minister of Women, Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran emphasized the urgency of the termite problem, particularly the aggressive Asian Subterranean Termites (AST), which have extended their reach from Lautoka all the way to Suva, impacting Labasa as well.
The minister highlighted that these infestations not only threaten the structural integrity of homes and buildings but also compromise the safety and peace of mind of vulnerable groups, including the elderly in care homes and children in orphanages. Recognizing the significance of this issue, Kiran appealed for joint efforts to effectively tackle the infestation.
The termite baits and traps provided by Fiji Chemicals Ltd will be strategically deployed to various Golden Age Homes, orphanages such as St Mina’s Home and St Christopher’s Home, and women’s shelters across Fiji. Kiran expressed gratitude to Fiji Chemicals Ltd for its contribution, highlighting that the collaboration between the private sector and government is crucial for creating a resilient and caring society.
This initiative follows a broader campaign by the Fijian government to combat termite infestations, which has been declared a serious risk in recent years, and aligns with ongoing government efforts such as a funded termite baiting program that aims to support households, particularly those earning under $30,000 annually. Notably, this initiative is part of a comprehensive strategy aiming to protect low-income households from the extensive damage caused by these pests.
The positive involvement of private companies, like Fiji Chemicals, shows a unified dedication to addressing urgent community needs and underscores a hopeful outlook for improved living conditions in the affected areas. With sustained and collaborative efforts, there is optimism that the fight against termites will yield effective results, ensuring safer environments for all residents in Fiji.
