Last night, Parliament approved the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Bill, culminating in a significant vote that saw 30 members in favor and 15 opposed. Following the vote, the Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission Bill 2024 has officially become an Act and will now be presented to the President for his approval.
The newly established Act is set to form the Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which will play a vital role in fostering open dialogue and investigating the underlying causes of the prevailing coup culture in Fiji. Furthermore, the Act aims to create a platform for addressing historical grievances while promoting unity and reconciliation among the nation’s citizens.
This step forward marks a hopeful development for Fiji as it seeks to heal past wounds and build a more cohesive society. By addressing the root causes of division and fostering communication, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission has the potential to contribute positively to the nation’s future.
