Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant challenge to global health, a concern that is being notably addressed in Fiji. The National Antimicrobial Resistance Committee has organized World AMR Awareness Week each year since 2015, and this year’s observance commenced on November 18 and will continue until November 24.
The week serves as a critical reminder about the importance of awareness, hygiene practices, and vaccinations, particularly lessons gleaned from the COVID-19 pandemic. Health Ministry Chief Medical Advisor, Dr. Luisa Cikamatana, officially launched AMR Week in Labasa, emphasizing that antimicrobial resistance not only jeopardizes advances in modern medicine but also threatens lives today.
Dr. Cikamatana pointed out Fiji’s commitment through the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance, which is currently in its second edition. This plan delineates essential objectives and promotes collaboration across various health sectors to combat AMR effectively.
In her address, she urged the public to heed healthcare professionals’ guidance regarding antibiotics, to refrain from sharing prescriptions, and to avoid requesting unnecessary antibiotics. Dr. Cikamatana emphasized the need for a united effort across all sectors—human, animal, and environmental health—to combat AMR and safeguard both local and global health.
Fiji’s proactive measures and focus on education and advocacy provide a hopeful outlook, as the country works towards a healthier future for all its citizens and the global community.
In summary, the heightened awareness and action against AMR during World AMR Awareness Week reflect a significant national and global health initiative, with Fiji showing leadership in tackling this pressing issue effectively.
