Fiji is among 22 countries in the Pacific region with specialized units for tackling transnational crime. Jodie Hurley, a senior officer with the Australian Federal Police Pacific Command, praised the Fiji Police Force for its commitment to addressing this issue, highlighting that the force has allocated resources to four dedicated units.

Hurley made these remarks during the launch of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) report titled “Transnational Organised Crime in the Pacific: Expansion, Challenges, and Impact” held in Suva. She noted the resource challenges faced in the region, mentioning that there are a total of 29 transnational crime units across the 22 Pacific countries.

“The Australian Government, through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, is proud to support and sponsor the Pacific Islands Transnational Organised Crime Units,” Hurley stated. She emphasized the importance of threat assessments for everyone in the region, explaining that understanding the environment enables authorities to recognize why criminal syndicates target specific locations.

With this knowledge, regional leaders can formulate policies and implement responses to combat these crimes. Hurley stressed the need for collaborative efforts among law enforcement, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations to create an unwelcoming environment for transnational organized crime.

She indicated that there is now valuable information available to enhance understanding of transnational organized crime threats and effective countermeasures. The ongoing program outcomes will allow for a focused discussion on these threats and the identification of necessary strategies to mitigate them.

“By working together, we have a stronger chance of success than if we tackle this issue individually. This initiative and its supporting programs are crucial for ensuring the safety and wellbeing of communities across the region.”
