As Fiji observes International Anti-Corruption Day, the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), Barbara Malimali, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to fulfilling its responsibilities as mandated by law. She emphasized that FICAC’s mission is to protect Fijians from corruption through thorough investigations, prosecutions, and crucially, public education.

Malimali pointed out that corruption poses a significant threat to democratic institutions and erodes public trust in governance, describing it as a parasite that damages societal systems. She underscored FICAC’s integral role in promoting the principles of good governance, transparency, and accountability, which are essential components in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.

In her address, she urged the community and stakeholders to actively participate in combating corruption by reporting any suspicious activities to FICAC. The theme for this year’s International Anti-Corruption Day is “Support FICAC to fight corruption, promote transparency, and uphold integrity in Government and Society.”

These efforts highlight a collective approach towards a corruption-free society, suggesting a growing awareness and willingness among Fijians to collaborate for a better future.

In summary, as Fiji recognizes International Anti-Corruption Day, there is a strong appeal for public involvement in the fight against corruption, emphasizing the importance of integrity and transparency in governance, reflecting a hopeful movement towards a more accountable society.
