Fiji’s Sports Minister, Jese Saukuru, has voiced support for a new initiative focused on random drug testing at sports events. This initiative is spearheaded by Ratu Manasa Radrotini, a Fijian national recently returned from New Zealand, where he studied drug testing methods. With the acquisition of a business license, Radrotini aims to leverage his expertise to enhance various sectors in Fiji, particularly in addressing the growing concerns surrounding drug use in sports.
In a recent meeting in New Zealand, Saukuru and Radrotini discussed the ongoing drug issues faced by the country, stressing that implementing drug testing is essential to safeguard athletes and uphold the integrity of sports. Radrotini shared his experiences in administering saliva and urine tests, expressing his desire to use his knowledge for the betterment of the community, stating, “I want to bring back this knowledge to help our people.”
In parallel, Minister Saukuru revealed plans to reinforce Fiji’s anti-doping agency, Drug-Free Sports, by establishing a dedicated secretariat aimed at overseeing drug testing across various sports. This initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to ensure a drug-free sporting environment, especially as the National Rugby Union has advocated for mandatory drug testing for players to strengthen integrity and deter substance abuse.
