The Fiji Police Force has announced the initiation of the destruction of 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine, which were seized during prominent drug raids in Nadi last January. This operation is in line with a High Court order from December 13, 2024, and is taking place at the Dignified Crematorium in Davuilevu, Nasinu, under strict security measures enforced by the Fiji Police and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.
With an estimated value of nearly $2 billion, the methamphetamine will be vaporized using a furnace, an internationally recognized and safe method for disposing of illicit drugs. Senior Superintendent of Police Kasiano Vusonilawe reassured the public, stating, “I can assure the public right now that they don’t have to worry about anything. The Fiji Police Force is committed to ensuring all the drugs are destroyed, and we are well prepared to do that.”
To facilitate a safe and transparent destruction process, extensive preparatory measures have been implemented, including collaborating with international partners from Australia, New Zealand, and the USA, along with the deployment of specialized canines for area clearance. The destruction operation is projected to span five to seven days, utilizing controlled incinerators that can handle different quantities of drugs at once.
This operation is a testament to Fiji’s continued efforts against drug trafficking and reinforces the authorities’ resolve to ensure public safety throughout the process. By eradicating such a significant amount of dangerous substances from circulation, the Fiji Police are actively working towards a safer community for all citizens.
The operation not only underscores the law enforcement’s dedication to maintaining the rule of law but also fosters hope for a future free from the adverse effects of drug-related crime. The complete destruction of these drugs symbolizes progress and a collective move toward community health and well-being.
