Fiji’s Online Safety Commission is intensifying its efforts to combat misinformation and enhance digital literacy in anticipation of the upcoming 2026 General Elections. Commissioner Filipe Batiwale confirmed that the Commission is actively expanding its outreach programs to educate communities on identifying fake news and safeguarding themselves from online threats.
During a recent panel discussion titled ‘Digital Veiwekani: Fighting Fake News Together’ at the German Embassy, Batiwale emphasized the importance of building public awareness prior to the elections. “Education is crucial in our work. It is through awareness that we can empower Fijians to be more discerning in online interactions,” he stated.
As part of its initiative, the Commission has already visited over 87 villages in the Ra province, tailoring educational materials to meet the needs of specific audiences, including vulnerable groups like children. The Commission is also collaborating with other state agencies to address a broader range of online threats, ensuring that issues beyond its direct remit, such as financial scams, are managed appropriately by relevant authorities like the Fiji Competition Commission.
In light of increasing incidents of online abuse and misinformation, these community-focused initiatives reflect a growing awareness of digital safety issues within Fiji. Similar concerns have been raised about the role of social media and its impact on public communication and trust, as highlighted by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and Fiji Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu. Both officials have underscored the risks posed by misleading information, especially as elections approach.
The Commission’s outreach and educational efforts could potentially lead to a more informed and resilient society, less susceptible to the harms of misinformation and cyber threats. This proactive approach not only aims to enhance digital literacy but also fosters a culture of responsible online behavior among Fijians, giving them the tools to navigate the complexities of digital information safely.
Collectively, these efforts indicate a positive direction towards a safer online environment in Fiji, emphasizing education, community engagement, and cooperation among various government agencies to address the pressing issue of digital safety.
