Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant and growing threat to global health, particularly in Fiji, where efforts are underway to combat this challenge. Since 2015, the National Antimicrobial Resistance Committee has organized World AMR Awareness Week, which commenced this year on November 18 and will continue until November 24. This week emphasizes the vital role of awareness, hygiene practices, and vaccination, drawing lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Luisa Cikamatana, Chief Medical Advisor at the Health Ministry, officially launched AMR Week in Labasa. She underscored that AMR not only jeopardizes advancements in modern medicine but also poses immediate dangers to lives. Fiji’s commitment to addressing this issue is reflected in its National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance, which is currently in its second edition. This plan sets forth key objectives and promotes collaboration across various health sectors.
Dr. Cikamatana urged the public to heed healthcare professionals’ guidance regarding antibiotic usage, refrain from sharing prescriptions, and avoid requesting antibiotics without proper medical advice. She called for a united response that includes all sectors — human, animal, and environmental health — to effectively tackle AMR and safeguard both local and global health.
By prioritizing education, advocacy, and concerted action, Fiji aspires to contribute to a healthier future for everyone. The ongoing efforts and the community’s collaboration reflect a hopeful path forward in the fight against this pressing health issue.
This renewed focus on AMR not only raises awareness but also instills optimism that with collective effort, significant progress can be made in safeguarding health for future generations.
