The issue of technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV) is gaining recognition as a pressing concern in today’s digital landscape. Online platforms that should promote inclusion and connection have increasingly become venues for harassment and harmful behavior directed towards women and girls.
Fiji’s Minister for Women, Lynda Tabuya, is taking proactive steps to address this issue. She has expressed intentions to empower Fiji’s online regulatory bodies, which currently lack effective authority to combat such violence. In collaboration with organizations like the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Ms. Tabuya aims to shed light on how TFGBV impacts women’s mental and physical health. She highlighted that online harassment can severely affect a woman’s well-being, leading to decreased productivity in various aspects of life.
To address these challenges, Ms. Tabuya is organizing a young women’s forum next month in honor of the 16 Days of Activism. This event will bring together young women to discuss strategies for tackling TFGBV. Furthermore, the UNFPA has conducted a gender analysis of Fiji’s Online Safety Act to assess its effectiveness in safeguarding women from online predators.
She pointed out the alarming statistic that women are ten times more likely than men to experience online harassment. With personal experience reinforcing her understanding of the issue, Ms. Tabuya emphasized the need for robust legislation to protect women, as well as enhancing collaboration among law enforcement, judicial bodies, and other stakeholders.
Ms. Tabuya insists on a national commitment to combat TFGBV, calling for accountability from internet service and telecommunications companies in prioritizing the safety of women and girls over privacy rights.
