The National Antimicrobial Resistance Committee has been at the forefront of raising awareness through World AMR Awareness Week, which has taken place annually since 2015. This year’s observance commenced on November 18 and will continue until November 24, emphasizing the significance of educating the public on proper hygiene practices and vaccination—key lessons derived from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Luisa Cikamatana, the Chief Medical Advisor of the Health Ministry, inaugurated AMR Week in Labasa, underscoring that AMR poses a serious threat not only to the advancements of modern medicine but also to the well-being of individuals today. She pointed out that Fiji’s proactive approach is evidenced by the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance, which is currently in its second edition. This plan sets forth essential goals and fosters collaboration among various health sectors.
Dr. Cikamatana encourages the public to heed the advice of healthcare professionals regarding antibiotic use, warning against the sharing of prescriptions and the unnecessary demand for antibiotics.
