Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses an escalating risk to global health, a challenge that is becoming increasingly prominent in Fiji. The National Antimicrobial Resistance Committee has been promoting World AMR Awareness Week since 2015, and this year, it commenced on November 18 and will run until November 24.

This year’s campaign emphasizes the need for heightened awareness, proper hygiene practices, and vaccination, drawing lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Luisa Cikamatana, the Chief Medical Advisor of the Health Ministry, officially launched AMR Week in Labasa. She underscored that AMR threatens not only the advancements made in modern medicine but also endangers lives currently.

Dr. Cikamatana highlighted Fiji’s proactive stance on this issue, noting the second edition of the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance, which encompasses essential goals and fosters collaboration across various health sectors. She encouraged the public to heed healthcare professionals’ guidance regarding antibiotic use, avoid sharing medications, and refrain from requesting antibiotics without valid reasons.

The call to action emphasizes the importance of a collective effort across human, animal, and environmental health to combat AMR, ultimately safeguarding local and global health. Through a combination of education, advocacy, and decisive action, Fiji has the potential to make significant strides towards a healthier future for everyone.

In summary, this initiative is a commendable move towards cultivating a more informed public and ensuring safe healthcare practices that can mitigate the effects of AMR. By proactively addressing these concerns, Fiji not only protects its citizens but also contributes to the larger global health landscape.
