Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is increasingly recognized as a significant global health challenge, and efforts to address this issue are particularly emphasized in Fiji. The National Antimicrobial Resistance Committee has been organizing World AMR Awareness Week since 2015 to raise awareness about this pressing concern.
This year’s observance of World AMR Awareness Week commenced on November 18 and will continue until November 24. The week is dedicated to promoting the importance of awareness, proper hygiene practices, and vaccination—key lessons derived from the COVID-19 pandemic experience.
During the launch of AMR Week in Labasa, Dr. Luisa Cikamatana, Chief Medical Advisor of the Health Ministry, emphasized that antimicrobial resistance poses a serious threat not only to the advancements in modern medicine but also to lives today. She pointed out Fiji’s proactive strategy through the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance, which is currently in its second edition and focuses on essential goals while promoting collaboration across various health sectors.
Dr. Cikamatana urged the public to adhere to medical guidance regarding antibiotic usage, avoid sharing prescriptions, and refrain from requesting antibiotics unnecessarily. She called for collective efforts across human, animal, and environmental health sectors to combat AMR, emphasizing that these measures are vital for safeguarding both local and global health.
Through educational initiatives, advocacy, and collaborative action, there is an optimistic pathway forward for Fiji, contributing to a healthier future for everyone.
This article highlights an ongoing global health issue while showcasing the positive steps being taken by Fiji to tackle antimicrobial resistance.
