The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) applauds the groundbreaking initiative of transporting green hydrogen from New Zealand to Fiji, alongside the launch of an innovative hydrogen dual-fuel generator at the Fiji Gas Lautoka Terminal. FCCC Chief Executive Joel Abraham highlighted the significance of this project, which is spearheaded by Obayashi Corporation and Halcyon Power, in partnership with Fiji Gas, and supported by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment (MOEJ).

Abraham noted that this project exemplifies how international collaborations can lead to transformative solutions that harmonize economic growth with environmental responsibility. He stated, “This is a significant advancement for sustainable energy in Fiji and the broader Pacific, addressing the pressing challenges of climate change and aligning with Fiji’s commitments under the Paris Agreement.”

The FCCC has long championed renewable energy and sustainability, and Abraham expressed pride in Fiji’s role as a regional leader in these efforts. He emphasized that through innovation and global cooperation, the nation can enhance its energy security while actively confronting climate change and moving away from fossil fuel dependence.

The pilot project incorporates a complete green supply chain, generating ‘green’ hydrogen from geothermal energy in New Zealand—a sustainable and carbon-neutral source—before shipping it to Fiji. Upon arrival at the Lautoka Terminal, the hydrogen is utilized to operate a dual-fuel generator, which efficiently runs on both hydrogen and diesel. This innovative approach significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions and enhances energy efficiency.

Furthermore, the introduction of hydrogen technology diversifies fuel sources, promoting energy security and reducing reliance on imported fuels. This not only saves costs but also boosts Fiji’s energy independence as global energy markets face increasing volatility.

Abraham extended his thanks to the governments of Japan and New Zealand for their invaluable support in this initiative. He remarked, “Your leadership inspires hope and determination for a cleaner, greener future for Fiji and the Pacific region.”

Looking ahead, the FCCC aims to continue fostering advancements in green energy and encourages stakeholders to take inspiration from this project and collaborate on initiatives that address critical issues such as climate change, energy security, and economic development. Abraham concluded with optimism, stating, “By embracing cutting-edge technologies, Fiji is forging a pathway toward a greener future where progress and sustainability are intertwined.”

This initiative not only represents a leap forward in energy innovation but also sets a benchmark for other nations in the Pacific region, showcasing that collaborative efforts can lead to lasting positive change in tackling environmental challenges.
