Fiji’s cabinet has formally approved a National Strategy for 5G Spectrum Assignment and Commercial Deployment, signifying a pivotal step towards enhancing the nation’s telecommunications infrastructure. This comprehensive strategy aims to facilitate the launch of fifth-generation (5G) mobile broadband services throughout Fiji, focusing on structured spectrum assignment, pricing frameworks, and an operator incentive model to promote widespread adoption.

The government’s initiative is part of its broader commitment to refine Fiji’s digital landscape, which includes not only improving connectivity but also driving economic benefits through advanced technologies. Unlike previous generations, 5G is expected to deliver dramatically higher data speeds, ultra-low latency, and the capability to connect numerous devices concurrently. This innovation is anticipated to foster advancements across various sectors, including healthcare, education, agriculture, and smart city projects.

In alignment with this rollout, Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica previously announced at the Fiji Tech Summit that the government is focused on launching the 5G network soon. He highlighted the numerous benefits of 5G, urging technology professionals to leverage this innovation to enhance services, while also committing to connect underserved communities. The introduction of Starlink services earlier this year has already improved internet access for remote areas, further supporting the government’s goal of bridging the digital divide.

This significant investment in digital infrastructure underscores Fiji’s vision of becoming a leading digital nation in the Pacific, emphasizing inclusivity and economic growth through technology. The anticipation surrounding the deployment of 5G services encapsulates a hopeful outlook for Fiji’s socio-economic development, promising to enrich the lives of its citizens and transform industry landscapes.
