Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has praised Fiji’s collaboration with Google, calling it a “milestone for technology” and a major advancement for the nation’s digital economy and that of the Pacific region. During the groundbreaking ceremony for Google’s new multi-million-dollar ICT facility in Natadola, Nadroga, Mr. Rabuka noted the transformative impact of this project, which is expected to be completed by late 2026.

“This infrastructure will establish Fiji as a key digital connectivity center in the Pacific,” he emphasized. The new facility will feature Viti Levu’s second cable landing station, improving internet resilience and aiding Fiji’s transition to a fully digital economy. He described this venture as a significant investment in connectivity and community progress.

The facility is set to include advanced data servers, power systems, and a cable landing station to connect Fiji with global networks, including Los Angeles. Brian Quigley, Google’s Vice President of Network Infrastructure, labeled the facility a symbol of innovation and economic strength for the Pacific region. “This project will help bridge the digital divide and further our mission to make the world’s information universally accessible,” he stated.

The economic implications of this project are significant. An Access Partnership report estimates that the development will generate over 3,600 jobs and add $574 million (USD$250 million) to Fiji’s GDP by 2030. It will also significantly enhance Fiji’s Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) sectors while benefiting healthcare, tourism, and education.

Mr. Rabuka reiterated that Google’s commitment indicates that Fiji is open for business and ready to become a center for innovation, entrepreneurship, and global trade. Furthermore, Google intends to apply its AI resources to combat climate challenges, such as forecasting floods using its Flood Hub tool, which can predict flooding up to a week in advance, aiding community preparedness.

Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) Chief Investment Officer Naibuka Saune described this partnership as a transformative investment for the nation’s ICT sector.

This collaboration represents a hopeful future for Fiji, positioning the nation not only as a technological hub but also as a proactive player in addressing global challenges. By enhancing digital infrastructure and connectivity, Fiji is creating pathways for sustainable economic growth and resilience in the Pacific region.

In summary, the partnership between Fiji and Google is poised to reshape the nation’s future, fostering job creation and sustainable development while ensuring that technology serves as a powerful tool to benefit communities across the Pacific.
