Parliament has officially enacted the Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Bill, a significant milestone for the People’s Coalition Government as it marks its second year in office. During the parliamentary session, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka introduced the Bill under Standing Order 51. This legislation paves the way for establishing the Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which aims to foster open dialogue, address historical injustices, and promote national unity and reconciliation within Fiji.

Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized that the drafting of this Bill involved consultations with both victims and perpetrators of various political events. The consultation process engaged a diverse range of stakeholders, including civil society organizations, faith-based groups, human rights advocates, media representatives, political parties, and local communities across Fiji’s Northern, Western, and Central divisions.

The Commission is designed to enhance social cohesion through healing processes and reconciliation, facilitating transparent discussions about the political upheavals experienced during the coup periods. Its ultimate goal is to provide closure and aid in the healing process for survivors of these tumultuous events.

The Bill was approved following a parliamentary vote, with 30 in favor and 15 against. It will be officially recognized as the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Act of 2024.

This development signals a move towards healing the wounds of the past and fostering a culture of understanding and cooperation in Fiji, ultimately contributing to a more unified society.

In summary, the passing of the Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Bill indicates a commitment to addressing historical grievances and promoting national unity, setting the stage for an inclusive dialogue that can lead to healing and closure for many. The establishment of the Commission is a hopeful step forward in rebuilding trust and cohesion within the community.
