The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in Fiji has taken a pioneering step by launching the ‘I Recycle’ program, making it the first ministry in the country and among the region to implement such an initiative. This program, which was unveiled in collaboration with the Pacific Recycling Foundation and Waste Recyclers Fiji Ltd, represents a significant milestone in promoting sustainable waste management and recycling practices throughout the nation.

The ‘I Recycle’ program is designed to shift mindsets and behaviors toward recycling, while also advocating for the rights and welfare of those engaged in collecting recyclables, who are now referred to as Collection Pillars of Recycling (CPR). Amitesh Deo, the founder of the Pacific Recycling Foundation, emphasized that this initiative is not just about recycling; it aims to drive environmental sustainability through practical engagement and visible participation. He praised the Ministry for its leadership in launching this comprehensive program and highlighted the crucial role collaboration plays in tackling waste management challenges.

Ministry of Environment Minister Mosese Bulitavu noted that the launch marks a collective commitment to creating a cleaner Fiji. He mentioned plans for the program to be adopted across various government complexes, infusing sustainable waste management practices into public service operations. The timing of this launch coincides with the National Anti-Litter Campaign, reinforcing the need for community involvement in the fight against waste and pollution.

The program also aims to encourage recycling as a daily habit while gathering data to monitor participation rates, improve behaviors, and assess the reduction of waste in landfills. Furthermore, there are prospects for establishing an upcycling plant in Fiji, which would enhance financial stability for CPR and strengthen the country’s commitment to sustainability.

In summary, the ‘I Recycle’ initiative represents a hopeful and proactive approach to waste management in Fiji, paving the way for a future where sustainability is ingrained in both community practices and government operations. By fostering a culture of recycling and environmental responsibility, this program sets a benchmark for other nations to aspire to.
