The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) is undertaking an extensive preliminary survey in Fiji to establish a National Alcohol and Other Drugs Recovery Center. This initiative, announced by the Ministry of Health, aims to combat the rising substance abuse issues in the country by offering targeted support for those facing addiction challenges.
The proposed facility is set to provide much-needed assistance to individuals suffering from substance use disorders, with particular attention given to vulnerable populations, including women, youth, and children. Additionally, it will offer support to healthcare professionals working in this demanding field.
To ensure that the center meets the specific needs of its target population, the Ministry of Health plans to consult with affected individuals and the broader community. This approach emphasizes the importance of including the voices of those impacted by substance use in the planning process, thereby enhancing the center’s effectiveness in addressing these pressing issues.
Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Health, Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, has expressed robust backing for the establishment of a drug rehabilitation center in Fiji, emphasizing the necessity for a dedicated facility to tackle the challenges associated with substance abuse. “The discussion of rehab centers has been around for some time, and the Ministry is fully supportive,” Dr. Tudravu stated.
He also highlighted the strain that drug-related cases have placed on existing mental health facilities, particularly at St Giles Hospital, which was initially established to address mental illnesses but is now increasingly accommodating drug-related patients. “A significant number of patients at St Giles Hospital are linked to drug use, which raises concerns, as the facility was originally intended for mental health treatment. This added burden is worrying for us,” Dr. Tudravu noted.
The establishment of this recovery center represents a hopeful step forward in Fiji’s efforts to address substance abuse, focusing on rehabilitation and support for individuals and communities in need. By engaging the community and prioritizing the needs of vulnerable groups, the initiative promises a more inclusive and effective response to this critical issue.
Overall, the effort by KOICA alongside Fiji’s Ministry of Health not only aims to address the current substance abuse crisis but also to build a sustainable support system that can adapt to the evolving needs of its population.
