Fiji Takes a Bold Stand: 4.1 Tonnes of Illicit Drugs Destroyed!

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has successfully overseen the destruction of 4.1 tonnes of illicit drugs, specifically methamphetamine, linked to the ongoing case against Justin Ho and others. This significant operation took place at the Dignified Crematorium in Davuilevu, under strict security measures from both the Fiji Police Force and military personnel.

The destruction process commenced last Monday, in accordance with a Lautoka High Court order issued in December last year. The ODPP had previously expressed to the court that it was neither feasible nor safe to store the seized drugs until the case’s resolution, leading to the request for their destruction.

Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, John Rabuku, informed the court about the completion of the destruction process and confirmed that a video recording alongside a detailed report will be filed in court shortly. The ongoing case, State-v-Justin Ho and others, is set to convene again on March 17, 2025, to address further legal disclosures and pre-trial documents.

This decisive action reflects Fiji’s commitment to combating drug-related crime with transparency and accountability. It also signals a proactive approach towards ensuring public safety and preventing potential community harm, reinforcing the judicial system’s serious stance against drug trafficking.

By addressing such cases with diligence and legal oversight, Fiji showcases an important step forward in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking, fostering hope for a safer future for its communities.
