Fiji Takes a Bite Out of Dental Issues: A New Focus on Youth Oral Health

Fiji is focusing on improving dental health among its youth and communities, highlighted during the recent World Oral Health Day celebrations in Suva. Parents and local communities are encouraged to instill daily oral hygiene habits in children as part of a long-term strategy for better dental health across the nation.

Jyotika Devi, the marketing manager for Colgate-Palmolive in Fiji and the Pacific, emphasized the need for early oral health education during the observance of the day. “Starting oral health education at a younger age increases the likelihood of a healthier future,” she stated. According to the Ministry of Health, Fiji faces a high incidence of dental health issues, reinforcing the necessity for community outreach initiatives.

In collaboration with the Fiji National University (FNU), the celebrations at Dudley Intermediate School in Toorak featured various interactive activities aimed at educating children about dental hygiene. This year’s theme, “A Happy Mouth is a Happy Mind,” focuses on the integral connection between oral health and overall well-being. Dr. Osea Dukuno, head of FNU’s School of Dentistry and Oral Health, underlined the importance of such programs in promoting dental health education.

Colgate-Palmolive plans to enhance and expand its educational initiatives, reflecting their commitment to community health. With similar programs in the past, such as the National Tooth Brushing Day, which saw significant participation nationwide, the emphasis on dental care and good oral hygiene practices continues to gain momentum.

Overall, these ongoing efforts by Colgate, in partnership with educational and health institutions, highlight a collective commitment to improve dental health standards in Fiji. By fostering healthy habits in children, communities can expect to see a brighter, healthier future.

This initiative reflects a hopeful outlook on the potential of focused educational programs and community engagement to transform dental health practices, ensuring that future generations benefit from improved access to quality dental care and knowledge.
