Fiji is currently facing a significant challenge with the rising incidence of complex online crimes, prompting urgent discussions about digital safety and responsible internet usage. Filipe Batiwale, the Commissioner of the Online Safety Commission, shared insights into the nature of these offenses, revealing that many cases involve multiple overlapping types of online crime within a single event.

Commissioner Batiwale highlighted that incidents often encompass various forms of harassment, including cyberbullying and doxing, which can impact not only individuals but also their families. He noted, “Most of the time, we see that the number of alleged perpetrators increases as investigations progress. A complaint may start with a single post about one person, but as multiple screenshots are shared, the case can involve many alleged offenders.”

This complexity adds significant strain to the investigation efforts of the Online Safety Commission and the Fiji Police Force. Moreover, the emotional and psychological impact on victims and their families can be profound, emphasizing the need for greater awareness and preventive measures.

In light of these challenges, Commissioner Batiwale is calling on the public to exercise caution when using digital platforms. He encourages individuals to think critically before sharing posts and to safeguard their own and others’ personal information online, stressing the importance of responsible digital engagement in the face of growing online threats. This proactive approach could help mitigate risks and foster a safer online environment for everyone in Fiji.
