The Fiji Aquatics Grand Prix Long Course wrapped up yesterday at the Suva Aquatic Centre, showcasing the talents of 126 swimmers from five prominent clubs: Dolphins, Oka, Tritons, Barracudas, and Great White Sharks. This event serves as a prime platform for these athletes, representing a significant step in their preparations for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Errol Taylor, Vice President of Fiji Aquatics, highlighted the importance of this competition, stating, “The road to the Commonwealth starts here.” In anticipation of the Games, Taylor confirmed that a national team is currently in training for the upcoming qualifiers. This team comprises elite local swimmers from the 2025 season and includes a few athletes abroad, all of whom are tied to sports scholarship agreements.
Following this Grand Prix, Fiji Aquatics plans to conduct its Open Nationals, which will serve as the ultimate trials for the Oceania Championships—critical qualifiers for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Fiji last hosted the competition in 2016, and although the 2023 event was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the swimming community is optimistic as it embarks on a new season filled with potential. With strong backing from local clubs and a clear development pathway, there is much excitement surrounding these athletes as they prepare to represent Fiji on the international stage. The Grand Prix is just the beginning of what is shaping up to be a thrilling season for Fiji Aquatics.
