The competitive selection for the Fiji Swimming team targeting the 2025 Pacific Mini Games in Palau intensified over the weekend during the second trial held at the Damodar Aquatic Centre in Suva. Fiji Swimming president Lucy Erasito confirmed a full turnout of athletes vying for the coveted spots, highlighting the participation of swimmers from both the Eastern and Western divisions.

“This is the second of three trials leading up to our final selection in April,” Erasito stated. The selection will consist of 16 swimmers, split evenly between males and females and inclusive of both under-18 and over-18 categories. The event’s format is designed as short-course mini meets to help swimmers gain valuable experience ahead of the Mini Games scheduled for June 29 to July 9.

Swimmers aiming to qualify must adhere to minimum performance requirements and demonstrate previous competitive experience, either representing Fiji or participating through their respective clubs, with endorsement from the national federation. Erasito noted the improvement observed during this trial, reflecting a positive trend compared to the initial meet.

“The results were promising, and it’s encouraging to see the progress from our athletes,” Erasito commented. The upcoming final trial will be critical as athletes strive to meet the necessary standards before the official team announcement.

The buildup to the Mini Games is not only fostering competitive spirits among the swimmers but also igniting a sense of community pride as the nation anticipates robust performances. Similar enthusiasm can be seen across the sports landscape in Fiji, as various sports teams prepare for the Mini Games, promising that athletes across disciplines are committed to showcasing their skills on an international stage.

The collective efforts and dedication from these athletes embody a hopeful narrative for Fiji’s representation in regional sports, aiming to elevate the nation’s standing in the global sporting arena.
