Pacific Games champion Hansel McCaig has achieved a remarkable milestone by setting a new national record in the men’s 100 meters medley. He clocked an impressive time of 57.31 seconds at the World Aquatics Swimming Championships held in Budapest, Hungary last week.
Joining McCaig were two other Fijian swimmers: Marseleima Moss and the U.S.-based David Young. Notably, Young also made headlines by setting a national record in the men’s 50 meters butterfly during the same championship.
In addition to the swimmers’ remarkable achievements, Fiji Swimming President Lucy Erasito and Eugene Panuve presented a strategic plan to World Aquatics aimed at guiding Fiji’s swimming federation over the next two Olympic cycles. This plan is the culmination of a nine-month collaboration with the International Federation that involved mentorship to align Fiji’s swimming goals with global standards.
A workshop held for Fiji Swimming stakeholders helped refine the organization’s vision, mission, and values. The comprehensive planning process led to valuable insights on how to navigate challenges similar to those faced by other national federations, regardless of their scale.
The Fiji Swimming Board expressed gratitude to its predecessors for establishing a solid foundation and emphasized a commitment to prioritizing athletes’ needs. The organization’s statement underscored a collective goal to elevate the sport in Fiji and foster the growth of its athletes.
This positive momentum from both individual accomplishments and strategic planning showcases Fiji’s commitment to excellence in swimming. It highlights the potential for future success on the international stage as the nation continues to develop its swimming talent and infrastructure.
