Pacific Games gold medalist Hansel McCaig has made a remarkable achievement by setting a new national record in the men’s 100-metre medley. He clocked an impressive time of 57.31 seconds during the World Aquatics Swimming Championships held in Budapest, Hungary last week. McCaig represented Fiji alongside two other swimmers, Marseleima Moss and U.S.-based David Young.

In addition to McCaig’s record-breaking performance, David Young also made headlines by setting a new national record in the men’s 50-metre butterfly at the same event. Their accomplishments highlight the growing talent within Fiji’s swimming ranks.

On another front, Fiji Swimming president Lucy Erasito and Eugene Panuve have presented a strategic plan to World Aquatics for the upcoming four years. This plan is the result of a nine-month collaboration with the International Federation, aimed at aligning Fiji’s swimming program with global standards. As part of this initiative, a workshop was held with Fiji Swimming stakeholders to refine the organization’s vision, mission, and values.

Fiji Swimming has successfully met its commitments to World Aquatics, providing it with challenges and insights on collaborative planning. Notably, the program revealed that many national federations face similar challenges, regardless of their size.

In their statement, Fiji Swimming expressed appreciation to both the previous and current board for their contributions in shaping the organization. The focus remains on prioritizing the athletes’ needs, emphasizing a collective effort in support of their development.

Overall, these developments represent a bright future for Fiji’s swimming community, showcasing potential for growth and excellence in the sport.

Commentary: The successful performances of McCaig and Young not only reflect their personal dedication but also serve to inspire younger athletes in Fiji. With the strategic planning initiatives underway, Fiji Swimming is poised for further achievements on the international stage, fostering a culture of support and excellence in sports.
