The Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations in Fiji has implemented a ban on the operation of Ferris wheels across the country, effective immediately. This decision comes in the wake of a serious incident involving a 12-seater Ferris wheel during the Wairiki Sevens tournament in Taveuni.

Currently, the National Occupational Health and Safety Services (NOHSS) is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident. The Ministry indicated that the amusement rides were inspected by NOHSS inspectors on December 7 and 9, 2024, to ensure all components were functioning properly, and a certificate to operate was granted on December 9.

In light of the investigation, the Ministry has issued a prohibition notice halting all Ferris wheel operations until further notice. The Honourable Minister, following in-depth discussions with senior Ministry officials, has decided that the suspension of all Ferris wheels is necessary to ensure public safety.

The NOHSS team is expected to provide a comprehensive report on the investigation once completed, and the Ministry will keep the public informed about the results and any further actions taken.

This decision reflects a commitment to maintaining safety standards within the amusement industry, prioritizing the well-being of all patrons. As investigations proceed, there is hope that the findings will lead to improved safety measures, ensuring that these beloved rides can operate securely in the future. Transparency in the investigation process can foster public trust, enhancing safety and enjoyment for all carnival-goers.
