The Fiji men’s rugby sevens team displayed resilience after an initial challenge to secure a 21-15 victory over Spain in their first match of the HSBC SVNS Dubai tournament at the Sevens Stadium in the UAE.
Despite losing Filipe Sauturaga to a yellow card early in the game, Fiji’s strong defensive strategy held up effectively. Notably, the team saw outstanding performances from its debut players, who scored all of Fiji’s tries. Kavekini Tanivanuakula was particularly impressive, scoring two tries before and after halftime, while George Bose contributed the crucial try that sealed the win in the 11th minute.
The team’s success was further backed by Terio Veilawa and Joji Nasova, who each added a conversion, proving essential to the final score. Spain, however, was also competitive, managing to score three tries through their players Eduardo Lopez, Francisco Cosculleuela, and Roberto Ponce.
Looking ahead, Fiji is set to take on the USA at 9:52 PM, with anticipation growing for their next match.
This victory not only marks a strong start for Fiji in the tournament but also highlights the potential of the new players bringing fresh energy to the team. Fans can be hopeful as the team builds momentum for their upcoming challenges.
